Thrifty was founded in 1958 as Thrifty Rent a Car System. In 1989, Thrifty bought Snappy Car Rental; in by the end of the same year, Thrifty itself had been bought by the Chrysler Corporation. Focusing on providing value-for-money car rentals, in 1997 Thrifty merged with Dollar Rent a Car to form the Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group. In 2012, Hertz Global Holdings purchased the Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, with the two brands operating today as Thrifty Car Rental and Dollar Rent a Car.
