New research from liligo.com reveals one in 12 Americans have fought with their significant other over poor travel planning

liligo.com, the travel comparison tool helping users find the quickest, cheapest and most efficient routes possible, today announced findings from its Travel Trends Report unveiling how travel habits are placing tension on modern relationships. According to liligo, almost a quarter (23%) of Americans agree that travel habits are a deal breaker when it comes to relationships. This is more so true for Millennials than any other generation with over one third (35%) of Millennials agreeing that travel habits could make or break a relationship. It’s evident that travel, thanks to social media and the rise of the wanderlust culture, has infiltrated our lives with more Americans traveling abroad in 2015 than any other year- a 7.6 increase from the year before.
This increase in travel amongst Americans brings with it the pressure to plan a better trip than what’s depicted on social media feeds. So, it’s no surprise Americans are prioritizing their travel plans over all else, but it’s beginning to take a toll when it comes to relationships. Forget the usual debate over religion and politics, liligo’s research reveals one in 12 Americans have actually gotten into an argument with their significant other over poor travel planning. This is even more common amongst females with more than double the amount of females (1 in 8) revealing they have gotten into a fight with their significant other over poor travel planning compared to men (1 in 20).
“At liligo, our goal is to make the planning process as seamless as possible so travelers can save both time and money with their travel arrangements in order to spend more time enjoying their actual vacation,” said Eric Urbain, U.S. Marketing Director for liligo.com. “It seems travel has transitioned into something that we have begun to associate with success and accomplishment, which has in turn created unwanted stress to plan and portray a perfect vacation. But, with so many other worries in our life, travel shouldn’t be one of them.”
Gone are the traditional ways of depicting personal success by getting married young and saving for a home early, replaced by wanderlust Americans who would rather skimp in certain areas to travel more. In fact, liligo’s study, conducted with third party research firm YouGov, revealed 1 in 12 Americans would actually skip a bill payment in order to afford a trip and almost a quarter of Americans (22%) actually save more money for traveling than they do for buying a home! It’s clear that the priorities of Americans have shifted from what they used to be, putting more of an emphasis on experiences rather than material items.
