Living and working abroad can be a life-changing experience, but how do you decide where to go? This list might help you: Mercer have revealed the most expensive cities for expats to live and work in this year.

Mercer have released the results of their annual Cost of Living survey, revealing which cities are the most expensive for expats in 2017. The list sees a large number of African, Asian and European cities in the top 10, as Luanda in Angola takes the title as the most expensive city for those living and working abroad. 

The survey takes New York as a base point of comparison, and considers over 400 cities across 5 continents in compiling the list. The cost of everyday items such as food, transportation and clothing are taken into account in determining which cities are the most expensive – and cheapest – for expats living abroad. 

The most expensive cities for expats in 2017 are: 

  1. Luanda
  2. Hong Kong
  3. Tokyo
  4. Zurich
  5. Singapore
  6. Seoul
  7. Geneva
  8. Shanghai
  9. New York City
  10. Bern

At the other end of the scale, the cheapest city was found to be Tunis, followed by Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan and Skopje in the Republic of Macedonia.
