Airbus has filed a patent for adjustable bench style seating with a flexible number of seat belts that could seat up to four people.
A series of mock-ups shows the different seating arrangements that the bench could adopt on a flight, either two large passengers, three average sized adults or a family with two small children.
Airbus claims the new seating style would optimize cabin space; it will also better cater for overweight passengers, seniors and families.
The concept has received online backlash from people commenting that it is the wrong way to approach the problem of obese flyers.
