No frills fares: American Airlines is to begin selling Basic Economy tickets this February, and they come with a number of conditions.

In a bid to compete with low cost airlines, a number of carriers have begun introducing a new travel class: Basic Economy. American Airlines announced yesterday that tickets for its new Basic Economy fare will go on sale in February, in 10 selected markets.

According to American Airlines President Robert Isom, the move means American “now has something to offer every customer, from those who want simple, low-price travel to those who want an ulta-premium experience via First Class”.

Basic Economy tickets will go on sale at a lower price; as a result, travelers will lose a number of the benefits of traveling with an economy ticket. Seats will be assigned at check in; basic economy ticket holders will be the last to board the plane; and that carry on luggage? No longer an option, as only a personal item will be allowed – and it must go under the seat in front of you, as use of the overhead lockers will not be permitted.
