After a wave of recent incidents of discrimination on Airbnb, a new accommodation website is working to offer an alternative.
Named Innclusive, the idea came as co-founder Rohan Gilkes experienced what he believes to have been racial discrimination when trying to book accommodation through Airbnb in Idaho. His experience wasn’t an anomoly: many Airbnb users have shared their own experiences through Twitter, using the hashtag #AirbnbWhileBlack. Examples include users being refused rental, or even being insulted directly by hosts – just this month, a North Carolina based Airbnb host was banned for life after making racist comments towards a potential renter.
Whilst Airbnb has sworn to look into such incidents, Gilkes – along with co-developer Zakihhah Meyers – decided to take matters into his own hands, creating rental site Innclusive. With the tagline “Be Yourself”, the aim is to create a platform where users can rent accommodation 100% discrimination free and is due to launch in 6 – 8 weeks.
